The Duggars and beyond
Fundie blog FAQ

A brief overview of questions, concerns, etc, that readers have expressed, or may express in the future.  I absolutely LOVE getting messages from y’all, so please don’t take this to mean otherwise!

Who are you?  I’m Molly, and it’s nice to meet you :)

Why does this blog exist/what is it about?  Ever since I read about the Duggars in Parents magazine maybe ten years ago, I’ve been fascinated by the religious megafamilies in America.  The blog started off as a Duggar/x-number Kids and Counting blog, with the occasional Bates post.  Then more megafamilies.  Then other religions who seem to want their followers to procreate.  Then fundamentalist families/churches/sects in general.  The main focus on this blog is still the Duggar programs, though.

Why haven’t you discussed this family/religion/church?  Probably because I haven’t heard of it, haven’t thought of posting about it, or didn’t think there would be any interest.  Any and all suggestions are encouraged!

You’re hilarious!  Thank you.  That’s not a question, but thank you!

Why are you so mean?  I’m gonna let you in on a secret: I’m not actually that mean.  I’m sarcastic, but for the most part the malice or venom expressed in these posts is for humorous intent.

So you don’t hate these people?  Not for the most part.  There are certain individuals covered on this blog who I find to be distasteful or downright horrible.  For example, the mothers who allowed their children to die because their church forbade religious intervention?  I think they’re loathsome beings.

Do you hate the Duggars? Only some of them.

Which ones?  Michelle, JimBob and Josh.

Why?  I think Michelle is a shitty excuse for a mother, for many reasons expressed on this blog.  JimBob is offensively ignorant.  And Josh is just a smug douche with a sense of entitlement and a truly bizarre sense of accomplishment given that he does absolutely nothing.

What about everyone else?  I’m pretty sure I could find at least one genuine nice thing to say about the individuals featured on this blog.

Do you hate Christians?  Absolutely not.  My girlfriend is a Christian and she’s the loveliest person I’ve ever known.  I have many devout close friends who are wonderful.

Do you hate conservatives? I hate conservative politics.

Do you hate Rick Santorum?  Very much.

Are you an atheist?  Nope.

Are you a liberal?  Certainly by fundamentalist standards I am.

Why do you make fun of these people?  Shouldn’t you be more tolerant?  I am tolerant.  I respect these peoples’ right to exist and I’m not trying to convert them, change their minds, have their children taken away, etc.  By all rights, I do tolerate these people.  I tolerate them more than they tolerate me, given how anti-gay rights a lot of them are.  I don’t like many aspects of how they live their lives, and I don’t like things about individuals personally. But I tolerate them.  Tolerance doesn’t mean not commenting or feigning acceptance.

If you don’t like these people/the shows, why continue to expose yourself to them?  Hee.  You said “expose yourself.”  Because I find them interesting.  Because I don’t think our experiences in life should be limited to things that we are comfortable with.  Because I find religion endlessly fascinating, especially religion in America.  And because I really don’t hate these people!

What if someone featured on this blog were to see it?  I would hope that they could accept criticism where it is given and also appreciate compliments where they have been given.

Where do you get the pictures you post?  Family blogs, fansites, TLC’s website, various news publications, flickr, tumblr, facebook…oh, and the caps of the Duggars’ shows I take myself.  I don’t have a program for it, so I do each one individually.  It takes more time than I’d care to admit to spending on something that presently only 95 people are looking at.

Aren’t you worried about getting sued?:  Nope.  First of all, with a readership of <100 people, I’m not nearly that important!  And I’m not profiting from this blog at all.  I am not claiming credit for images on this site except for the screencaps I take (and I don’t actually own those since the images are really TLC’s).

How do you know *insert trivia here*?  I probably read it on the internet.

Is everything posted here true?  How in the fuck should I know?  Probably not.  If I present something as a fact I try to verify it beforehand, and I try to hunt down a rumor’s genesis at the very least, but there are a LOT of rumors about the Duggars out there and I think we all know that we can’t really know the truth behind any of them.

You made a mistake here!  Oh, my bad!  Please bring errors to my attention; I may not have the patience to find an ancient post and edit it, but I’ll make sure to at least acknowledge the error in a text post.

Why don’t you have a “gothardite” tag?  Because I have enough tags I have to bust out every damn time I post a Duggar or a Bates.  If a particular sect isn’t tagged, they’re assumed to be a Gothardite.

Shouldn’t the Duggars and Bateses be tagged as Baptists?  You have a tag for that!  See above.

Are you a member of Free Jinger?  Yes, but I’m not active on the forum, just the facebook page.

Tell me something interesting about yourself:  I have a pretty big collection of religious memorabilia and books that make me go “WTF?” on a regular basis.  I’m actually thinking about adding them as a feature to this blog.  Y’all wouldn’t believe some of this stuff.

Wait, are you sure you don’t hate Christians?  Yep!  Most of the Christians I know have the same reaction to these things as I do.  And those reactions are not “Ew, Jesus!”  or “LOL Christians are stupid!”  They’re “Wait, people spend money on this?  Who the heck thought this up?!  Weird.”

Since you collect it, you spend money on that stuff! Touché.

You didn’t answer my question!  So ask!  :)  I really do love getting messages from you guys!
